MKWDCS Promotes Village Savings and Loaning Associations (VSLA) to Strengthen Financial Inclusion and Women Empowerment

Maasai Kajiado Women Dairy Co-operative Society Ltd (MKWDCS) is promoting the Village Savings and Loaning Association (VSLA) concept among its members as part of its commitment to financial inclusion, economic empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods for women and smallholder farmers.

What is a VSLA?

A Village Savings and Loaning Association (VSLA) is a self-managed group where members regularly save money and can borrow from the group’s pooled savings. At the end of a cycle, savings and profits are shared among members.VSLAs are simple, community-based, and designed to help people who may not easily access formal banking services.

Why VSLA Matters for Dairy Farmers

For dairy farmers, access to small, timely loans and savings mechanisms is crucial for:

. Purchasing animal feeds and veterinary services

. Investing in improved dairy breeds and equipment

. Supporting household needs such as school fees and health expenses

. Expanding income-generating activities

By promoting VSLA groups, MKWDCS is helping members build a culture of saving, financial discipline, and collective support.

Empowering Women and Youth

As a women-led cooperative, MKWDCS recognizes that women often face barriers in accessing financial services. VSLAs provide a safe, trusted, and accessible platform for women and youth to save, borrow, and invest in their businesses and households. The cooperative will support members to form VSLA groups, train group leaders, and provide financial literacy and record-keeping training.

Partnerships and Future Plans

MKWDCS will collaborate with development partners, NGOs, and county stakeholders to scale up VSLA adoption and integrate the groups with broader economic empowerment initiatives.

Call to Action

MKWDCS invites all members to join or form a VSLA group and take control of their financial future through collective saving and responsible borrowing.Together, we are building financially resilient women and thriving dairy communities.
